Matchbox cars are a popular collecting niche, with many websites and clubs around the world dedicated to these tiny diecast cars. It can be daunting when you begin collecting them, as there are many models to choose from. It helps to know the basics about the Matchbox range.
Lesney
The original Matchbox cars were made by a British company, Lesney Products & Co. Ltd. The early cars were detailed copies of British designs, and the boxes were even made to resemble matchboxes. The company went bankrupt in 1982, and today the Matchbox brand is owned by Mattel. Cars made before 1982 are often called Lesney Matchbox cars.
The 75 Series
The mainstay of Matchbox collecting is the 75 Series. This range has been going for decades, and contains only 75 models at any time. Each year new cars are added, and the less popular ones retired. The goal of many collectors is to acquire a complete collection for a given year. Keeping up with all the models is a challenge, but there are lots of guides on the internet.
The Superfast 75 Series
In the late 1960’s, Mattel’s Hot Wheels cars started using low-friction wheels. They became so popular that Lesney had no choice but to add them to Matchbox cars. These models are called the Superfast 75 Series.
Rare Matchbox Cars
Lesney realized early on that Matchbox cars were being collected, and started making limited editions of their Models of Yesteryear range. Today, the large scale Matchbox Collectibles range is made for collectors.
Price Range
Matchbox cars range in price from a few dollars to several hundred dollars for the rarer models. The condition of the box is especially important to Matchbox collectors.
